Every One Needs A ‘Tiffany Haddish’

If this name hasn’t rung a bell till now, then you should go see the movie ‘Girls Trip’. Whether you are a man or a woman, you need to see this movie. I hardly have time to ‘Netflix and chill’ but I was hell bent on watching this one. I must  say,  It’s been a long time I laughed so hard and grinned throughout a whole movie. I can’t be a spoiler so I’d keep the storyline to myself but I am just going to put the spotlight on just one of the cast members, Tiffany Haddish who played  ‘Dina’; a vivacious, troublesome, act-before-you-think, ride-or-die, loud girl. I’m so refraining myself from calling her a b*@#h….though she prides herself in being called that.

Now, Dina reminds you of that friend you had in high school that can ‘drink panadol  for your headache’, she picks up your fights, she’d always put you in trouble by her misdemeanor but be sure she would stand by you. Most times people like Dina are not taken seriously. You really don’t give them as much care as they give you but in the actual sense, they are the ones who are truly your friends. You don’t even want to be found hanging out with them because of the trouble they would cause you or how they would embarass you but they are the ones who know you and hold you down when things get ugly. I remember during my Youth Service, I met a girl during the registration. I came in late and I just asked her for steps to take towards registering. She went all out to explain every step and even secured a space for me. I was laid back but saw how she was just so free with other Corp members on day one. We ended up being roommates and her bunk was next to mine. Being on camp was so much of a drag for me. A lot of people get excited this period, I really don’t know why but I was so sad the whole 21 days of camp. What was there to be excited about? Waking up in a military setting, holding back the urge to do Number 2 because of bad toilets, marching  when all you want to do is just relax….but through all these, this young lady had a way of brightening me up. She was ‘razz’ and didn’t care. Correct Lagos/Ibadan/ Ekiti babe. Even after camp, she kept looking for a place for me to stay, so we could be neighbours, if not roommates. For fear of her coming after me, I choose to just stop here on the description and just say, she was the typical ‘Dina’. Large heart, she’d cook for you and don’t care how many times you cook for her, she’d foresee a dude who wants to play you and warn  you before hand and she can break a bottle, literally, if you mess with her. People wondered the disparity in our personalities and how we were able to hold  our friendship high. They wondered why I’d leave my peaceful room and come stay with her. It was probably because she made the best noodles but ermmm… she was that friend. A ‘Dina’ kinda’ girl. So I didn’t joke with her. The way she fought my battles and cheered me on genuinely made me cherish our friendship. Yeah, there were loopholes but we walked through it.

With the wave of social media, virtual lives, virtual friends leading to more fake friends, we need to hold those who have been and are always there for us. They might not fit into your picture-perfect life which by the way is a myth but they genuinely care about you. When last did you call that friend? When last did you set up a chat and genuinely ask how they are doing? Those are friendships you should value and not going with the crowd and having your clique of ‘slay queens’. Everybody needs a true friend. They might not be dogged physically, but emotionally and mentally they can be dogged for you. Either be that kind of friend or have that kind of friend….or better still, be both.

Anyway, I’m going back to watch that movie. I’ve even started following Tiffany Haddish on Instagram and I tell ya, she is 98% of her character- ‘Dina’. Girls Trip has replaced the movie ‘Hangover’ for me. Girls Trip is a must-see. Who has seen that movie? Your thoughts? Am I the only one so excited about how these black ladies nailed it? (Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Queen Latifah and Tiffany Haddish).

P.S: This is not a movie review but it could be…..if they pay me enough. Lol
